Heronview Wins Familiar Details Award in 2021 Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Award

The Loudoun County Design Cabinet, a volunteer group of architects, engineers, planners, and designers dedicated to supporting quality design in Loudoun County, presented the 2021 “Signatures of Loudoun” design awards in a ceremony on June 29.

The Signatures program, now in its 17th year, recognizes businesses and community organizations that choose superior design standards in building, renovating, or expanding a project. Each year, the community is invited to submit nominations, which are voted on by the cabinet.

This year’s awardees are:

Pace Setters Award:

• Ashburn Station, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (F. Thomas Lee, AIA, Samaha Associates, P.C.; and Kiran Parikh, design manager, Loudoun County Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure)

• Loudoun School for Advanced Studies (Reader & Swartz Architects, P.C; Deep Sran, Ph.D., Loudoun School for the Gifted; Painter-Lewis, PLC; Hammerhead Construction; Simpson Gumpertz & Heger; and Comfort Design)

Interiors Award:

‘Signatures of Loudoun’ awards celebrate superior design

The Loudoun County Design Cabinet, a volunteer group of architects, engineers, planners and designers dedicated to supporting quality design in Loudoun County, has announced their 2019 “Signatures of Loudoun” design award winners:

• 880 Harrison, Leesburg

• Academies of Loudoun, Leesburg

• Ashburn North Parking Garage, Ashburn

• Boulder Crest Institute for Posttraumatic Growth, Bluemont

• Brambleton Office Building and Library, Brambleton

• Dulles South Recreation and Community Center, South Riding

• Integrus Holdings, Inc. / Fortessa Tableware Solutions, LLC, Ashburn

• Mural at One Loudoun, Ashburn

• Willard Intermediate School, Aldie

The Signatures program, now in its 15th year, recognizes businesses and community organizations that choose superior design standards in building, renovating or expanding a project.

Each winter, the community is invited to submit nominations, which are voted on by the cabinet and high school student volunteers. Winners are chosen in the following categories: details, familiar, infrastructure, interiors, legends, makeovers, public spaces, pacesetters and students’ choice.

The winners were honored during a special ceremony at the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors meeting on June 4.

“Creative design is about more than just aesthetics—studies have linked it to an enhanced sense of community. Every new construction project creates opportunities to build Loudoun’s identity,” said Loudoun Economic Development’s Executive Director Buddy Rizer. “That spirit is captured in all of the winners, such as the re-imagination of 880 Harrison into a cutting-edge co-working space, as well as Fortessa Tableware Solution’s naturally-lit, industrial showroom in One Loudoun.”

The ceremony also featured a “Vision in Design” award, which recognized Kim Hart’s lifetime of contributions through the Windy Hill Foundation. Since 1981, Hart and the Foundation have worked to provide Loudoun County with attainable workforce housing.

“Kim Hart and the Foundation he served for 25 years, have been instrumental in spearheading and developing the workforce housing movement in Loudoun County,” said Design Cabinet Chairman Alan Hansen. “In addition, the Foundation spends more than $200,000 each year to supports several important programs for residents, including a year-round, after-school Study Buddies program.
